Hoo... my first day sacking for a whole shift. My back and arms are tired, but I feel pretty good: I like lifting heavy things. Gives me a real sense of strength.

And, to my dismay, I am starting to develop a crush on Jeff Lereaux, the front end supervisor. Not the most smiley guy (though I managed to get a gentle smile out of him; I have this knack of bringing smiles to people's faces by smiling at them.), but he's very considerate and polite. ...And, he looks a little like a younger Lambert Wilson: doesn't quite have the hawk-nosed profile and he's a lot darker, but he's got the long, slightly lantern-jawed face and the high forehead over slitty eyes. Oh boy... Last thing I need to do right now is develop a crush on someone in management. There's this really dumb rule at Market Basket: clerks cannot have relationships with managers, which I think is downright stupid. I've always been more drawn to the fellows higher on the totem pole, mostly because they're a little older than I am, and also they're mature and intelligent, unlike the grunts (in all senses of the word) in the blue jackets who work as stockers or sackers, who are generally high school kids. I just want a license to fish off the company pier as they say, and not have to be content with minnows.

Tonight was my dad's fifty-fifth birthday: my mom and I got him a pie from the bakery and put two number 5 candles on it. Then the three of us went out to Westford to the Kimball's Farm ice cream stand. Too bad it's still damp: we could have put the top down on the convertible... We'll get a good night soon enough.
